§ 1

The supreme medicine has three grades: spirit (shen), qi, and essence (jing).

Elusive and evasive, obscure and dark.

  1. 上藥三品 ("the three grades of the supreme medicine") are the Three Treasures (三寶) of inner alchemy: essence (精), qi (氣) and spirit (神).

Abide in non-being, guard what has being, and it is completed in an instant.

Turn back the wind and blend [them] together; in a hundred days the work becomes numinous.

  1. 回風混合 ("returning wind, blending and uniting"): in inner alchemy, "wind" is the breath, turned back inward to fuse essence, qi and spirit. 百日 ("a hundred days") is the classic period of the first stage of practice, "laying the foundation."

§ 3

Silently pay court to the Supreme Lord; in one cycle of twelve years, ascend in flight.

Those who know awaken easily; for the benighted it is hard to practise.

  1. 一紀 is a period of twelve years.

§ 4

Tread upon the light of Heaven; with each breath, nourish clarity.

Going out through the Mysterious and entering through the Female, as if absent, as if present.

  1. 出玄入牝 recalls the "Mysterious Female" (玄牝) of Daodejing chapter 6; inner alchemy reads it as the cycle of breathing.

§ 5

Unbroken and continuous, it secures the stem and deepens the root.

Every person has essence; essence unites with its spirit,

  1. 綿綿 and 深根固蒂 echo Daodejing chapters 6 and 59.

§ 6

spirit unites with its qi, and qi unites with the true [nature] of the body.

If one does not attain this truth, all [talk of it] is only a forced name.

§ 7

Spirit can enter stone; spirit can make the body fly.

It enters water and does not drown; it enters fire and is not burned.

§ 8

Spirit depends on the body for its life; essence depends on qi for its fullness.

Unwithering, undiminished, green like pine and cypress.

§ 9

The three grades share one principle; its wonder cannot be heard.

When they gather, there is [life]; when they scatter, there is dispersal.

§ 10

When the seven apertures are open to one another, each aperture is bright with light;

the sacred sun and sacred moon shine upon the Golden Court.

  1. 金庭 ("Golden Court") is an inner-alchemical term for an inner bodily space; commentators differ on its location.

§ 11

Once attained, it is attained for ever; naturally the body becomes light.

The Great Harmony overflows, and the bones dissolve into cold jade.

  1. 骨散寒瓊: the transformation of the coarse body into a refined, jade-like substance.

§ 12

Attaining the elixir, one becomes numinous; not attaining it, one falls.

The elixir is within the body; it is neither white nor green.

  1. 丹 (dan) is the elixir — in inner alchemy, not a substance to be swallowed but the refined union of essence, qi and spirit.
  2. 非白非青: the elixir has no visible colour. Balfour's translation reads "neither white nor black," reflecting a variant

Recite and keep it ten thousand times, and its wondrous principle will become clear of itself.

Frederic Henry Balfour (1884) — 全文

There are three degrees of Supreme Elixir—the Spirit, the Breath, and the Essential Vigour. Obscure and recondite! Confused and dim! Maintain vacuity, and you will preserve the actual—accomplishing it in an instant of time. Restore the [ancient] habits, and chaos will be brought into harmony; a hundred days, and the work will be achieved; then you may silently adore the Supreme Ruler, and in twelve years' time may wing your flight above. The wise understand this easily, but the dull find it difficult to perform. [Those who have attained it] tread in the Light of Heaven; by inhaling and exhaling, they nourish the Pure Breath; they emerge from the Azure (Heaven) and enter the Female (Earth); now, as it were, annihilated, and now, as it were, existing, they never cease to all eternity; their supports are strong, their roots deep.

Men are all possessed of Essential Vigour; this corresponds with the Spirit, the Spirit with the Breath, and the Breath with the essential nature of the body. Those who have not obtained their original or essential nature, all usurp their reputation.

The Spirit is able to enter stone; the Spirit is able to fly through solid bodies. If it enters water, it is not drowned; or fire, it is not burned. The Spirit depends, for its birth, upon the body; the Essential Vigour depends, for attaining its full proportions, upon the Breath. They never lose their vitality or force, but are evergreen, like the pine and cedar trees. The three are all one Principle. Their mystery and beauty cannot be heard. The combination of them produces existence; their dispersion, extinction. If the seven apertures are all open, each aperture will be bright and luminous, [for] the Holy Sun and Holy Moon will pour their effulgence upon the Golden Hall. Once obtained, they are obtained for ever; then the body will become naturally buoyant, the Universal Harmony will be replete, and the bones will dissolve into the cold chrysoprasus-flower. If the Elixir be obtained, supernatural intelligence will result; if it be not obtained, there will be defeat and ruin. The Elixir, being in the centre of the body, is neither white nor black.

If this treatise be conned-over and observed ten thousand times, its beautiful and mysterious doctrine will become clear of itself.
